This project for the Transportation Research Board (TRB) is led by the TransitPlus consulting team working with state DOTs and local transit agencies. The project will deliver the following benefits:

  • Technology resources that help transit agencies plan, procure, implement, and maintain successful and effective transit technologies
  • Resources that help DOTs expand support for agencies incorporating transit technologies; address internal challenges such as cybersecurity and procurement; and support technology integrations

Reviews and analysis, Nov 2024-July 2025: The TransitPlus team reviewed key literature and resources for transportation agency technology adoption; assessed the market landscape for relevant technologies; and identified current channels through which agencies may receive training on procuring and adopting transportation technologies.

Engagement and analysis, Oct 2024-July 2025: Our team engaged rural, small urban, and Tribal transit providers and state DOTs via online surveys and interviews to learn about their transit technology needs, challenges, experiences, and ideas.

>> Status: This work is largely completed with contining analysis; the results will be presented in interim and final project reports. Resource development will be driven by learnings from the literature, market, and training reviews, and results from engaging transit providers and DOTs.

Based on an analysis of the research and engagement results, and guidance from the TRB research panel, our team will draft resources and tools that will build the capacity of state DOTs and transportation providers to transition to the digital world.

To assess their effectiveness and value, we will pilot the draft materials and collect ideas on distribution methods.

>> Status: This work is now under way and will continue through spring 2026.

Based on DOT and transit agency input and guidance from the TRB research panel, our team will develop recommendations for making these technology resources widely available.
